diving into the science behind escape games and their affect on the brain

PROJECT THEME for 2018:

Hidden History

STATEMENT of PURPOSE:

To learn about the history of escape rooms and to create my own breakout box.

GUIDING QUESTIONS:

How are escape rooms made? Why do people like them? How could I create my own breakout box? How do I make working props that look accurate to what they are inspired by? How could I outsource this project, or get more experienced makers to help me out?

GOAL(s): To make my own breakout box, inspired by the history of escape rooms.

EVIDENCE:  My breakout box, my tri-fold, and my notes

OUTCOME: I finished my breakout box,  and it is able to be played. The clues are understandable and fun, and people enjoy playing it! I am also going to be presenting my breakout box at my internship at my local library.

REFLECTION: There were a lot of things that went right with this project, but also a lot of things that could have gone better. For example, I kind of stalled making the clues for a really long time, because I wanted to make sure I had enough information. But I realized at the end that I just didn't have enough information in total, and that my topic was too specific. So I switched my topic, and the clue ideas almost immediately came to me! I think if I could do this over, I would do self reflection while I was doing the project, not just after. I realized that I was in a slump, and I didn't do anything about it except for try to do more research. But nonetheless, I think the end product turned out well. The presentation went way better than last year, which is good. It was nice to see improvement in my presentation techniques, but if I had to change something, I think I would make it so that I was able to answer questions at my tabletop for a while, since I didn't really get to that. But overall, I think this project turned out pretty well! I managed my time okay, and I didn't drown myself in work.

EVALUATION: I assessed my projects with this rubric that I created with help from my adviser.

PROCESS:

    • Research the topic

    • Review materials that I already have

    • Interview Jim about how he made his breakout box. (Check that below in my notes!)

    • Make a first design of the box, and all the clues

    • Order new materials

    • Interview a person from Esc4pe. (Check that out here!)

    • Revise designs

    • Start making the clues

    • Start making the box

    • Finish making the clues and box

    • Make a promo video about the box. (Check that out below!)

    • Set up a room/hallway in the school for the breakout box to be broken out of

    • Make an overview statement. (Which can be found here)

    • Exhibit!
